Press Release
RBS Bank Closures
October 1 2018
Dumfries and Galloway Pensioners for Independence reacted with dismay at the closure of the remaining RBS branches. This will disproportionately hit pensioners with less mobility and access to internet banking.
It is a sad dent in the reputation of David Mundell as a constituency MP. As a member of the Government which owns RBS on our behalf he could have intervened. Instead he repeated the mantra that it had to be a commercial decision without explaining why. As a constituency MP he could have campaigned against the cuts. Instead his whole tenor has been in support of RBS. He defended the cuts and he defended their poor advertising of the consultancy process.
The lack of banking facilities is compounded by decisions to close Post Offices in rural areas. It is a disaster not only for pensioners but for rural businesses that a major bank owned by the taxpayer has abandoned any interest in investing in the South of Scotland.
