83% Increase In Electricity Transfers From Scotland To England And Wales

"These UK Government figures, released two days ago, reveal the massive and increasing level of transfer of electricity from Scotland to England. In 2018 only, the transfer rate increased from 13 512 GWh to nearly 25 000 GWh. 1 GWh would heat 700 000 homes! This 83% increase is hidden in the above 53.8% increase total adopted. Note that the ratio of transfers from Scotland to England compared with those from England to Scotland is 25 to 1!"

New Technology Could Be A Game Changer

"A breakthrough in renewable energy could see Scotland becoming one of the largest global energy exporters in the world. New technology, pioneered in Australia, enables the production of low-cost ammonia, which can easily be stored, shipped and turned into hydrogen and is becoming a key green energy source. If implemented in Scotland it could be the country’s main source of energy and create a knowledge economy."

Scotland's Tidal Power Generation Hits Record High

In Energy Voice today: ‘Simec Atlantis Energy’s chief executive Tim Cornelius announced that the Meygen tidal array had exported more than 12 gigawatts (GW) of energy to the Scottish grid. The tidal turbine has now beaten the previous world record held by SeaGen. Mr Cornelius said: “Meygen has now exported more than 12GWh of tidal energy to the grid in Scotland, surpassing the previous record held by SeaGen in Strangford Lough (11.6 GWh).

8% Of The UK Population But 28% Of The UK Wind Energy

You’ll see that Energy Voice has concentrated on the UK performance: ‘Onshore and offshore wind farms in the UK supplied 35.6% of electricity generation, more than gas (31.2%) and nuclear (21.3%) between Friday 8 and Thursday 14 March. On its own, offshore wind generated 21.4% of all electricity required last week.’https://www.energyvoice.com/otherenergy/194981/blustery-week-sees-uk-wind-energy-take-generation-top-spot/. A quick calculation reveals that Scotland produces 28.5% of all of the UK’s wind-powered electricity generation.

Scottish Scientists In Major Energy Breakthrough

In the Insider yesterday: ‘A cut-price wave energy device that could help power homes and businesses is being developed by experts at a Scottish university. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have been working with institutions in Italy to come up with the renewable energy system. They say their design is cheaper than more conventional alternatives, is made of durable materials and has fewer moving parts. Small-scale experiments in an ocean simulator have indicated a single full-sized device could generate the equivalent of 500 kilowatts of electricity – about enough to power 100 homes. Engineers believe the new Dielectric Elastomer Generator (DEG) device could be installed within decades, providing fleets of low-cost, easy to maintain power producing units.’
